Yoga

So, what is Yoga? Heard of it but think it’s just about being bendy?

Don’t know your child’s pose from your tree, and certainly have no idea what a downward dog is, then maybe it’s time to become a little more acquainted with this form of exercise.

Traditionally known as a practice (as you’re always learning and evolving wherever you’re at), Yoga brings many benefits from increasing flexibility to boosting focus, helping you sleep and relax, all the way to, yes maybe some day, touching your toes (here’s a little secret though, we all can touch our toes : who said you had to do this with straight legs?)

But back to Yoga, what is it?

Some say exercise, a philosophy or a way of life? In short, Yoga encourages the connection between your mind, body and your breath – which are considered the three fundamentals of all human beings.

Yoga focuses on a series of postures (asanas or moves) that are designed to increase your strength and flexibility whilst also focusing on breathing. Not only that, it can help centre your mind, and thoughts as well as relax you.

Starting the class sitting or lying down (can’t think of a better way to start a class!), you’ll make your way around the mat through standing postures to seated and finally lying down. Expect to move up and down a little, speed is dependent on the class you choose; flow will go much quicker than relax & restore!

Heard of different types of yoga and a little confused?

There are many different styles which vary in their focus (sometimes posture, sometimes breath, sometimes relaxation). They often vary in pace, flow to increase your heart rate to restorative designed to focus more on relaxation and meditation. We suggest giving some different classes a go to see which suits you best – you may be surprised at the style you choose!

Benefits of Yoga:

Physical :

increasing your flexibility: you don’t need to be able to touch your toes to start (that’s the point!). Remember it’s a gradual process

increasing your muscle strength: whilst building strength, you’ll also balance this with your flexibility

improves your posture and keeps your spine moving

increases your blood flow: more oxygen into your cells

releases tension from the body: helps with counteracting sitting down all day

Mental:

helps you focus: allowing to be in the ‘here and now’ away from worrying about what has happened or what might happen next

relaxes the body: yoga encourages you to slow your breath down, which has real calming qualities

Why not come and give it a go and see what works for you.
